"Flaws & All" Recap

Hello Lovelies,

This will be a short recap. It was AMAZING! I will never be able to express the amount of joy I felt that day. Maria and Diana at Beatniks are the most wonderful women in the whole wide world for opening their shop to little ole me. The support Saturday was unheard of and I have tired my best to thank everyone. I put together a little something so you can get the inside view yourself.

Thank you to my mommy for being the amazing person she is (that sums up everything for this weekend), Ahshia for helping me make this connection and pushing me to do this event, Erika for always having the supplies i need lol, Mia and Heather for being an amazing support system and giving me strange medical solutions, my co-workers for supporting the unknown, my Lovely linesisters...what would I do without the Elements of Envy, my gorgeous neo... kiss kiss, and last but not least...that AMAZING FORCE OF SISTERHOOD, Mu Kappa Omega, for coming out of the woodworks to support a young Soror. I see the true spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha in each one of you. Its too many of ya'll to name but you know who you are! Thank you for the bottom of my heart for supporting me today! I love you all.

Thank God for Netflix and Youtube

Hello My Lovelies,

So today I spent all day in bed nursing my sickness and I must say I feel a lot better. I have been entertained by cartoons on netflix and terribly funny men on youtube all day long. I would post links to their site but some of the words are as lovely as I would like ya'll to believe I am lol. Tissues and Theraflu have been my survival kit today and are allowing me to make it to Saturday.

I don't know...the pic is just cool.

Still doesn't taste like Rrrrum Punch...

I'm now up cleaning my apartment because mommy is coming in the morning. I can't tell ya'll how much her support means to me. She's the greatest!

My mommy decorating her best friend's Christmas. Yep, its a tradition.

When It Rains It Pours

Hello My Lovelies,

As some of you may know this weekend is a very exciting weekend. I will be having my first trunk show, Flaws & All, at the cutest vintage shop in the Heights, Beatniks. As much as I'm excited I'm equally nervous and keep on hoping I have everything I need. To add to the nail biting nervousness....I'm getting sick. Yep, sick. I have been soooo carefully this whole crazy weather season to stay well and now the week before this amazing day I'm getting sick. I have decided that I am going to spend as much of tomorrow in bed as possible so I can crank out last minute details on Friday or at least see how much I can get done from bed on Thursday.

Theraflu and a good book...just what the doc ordered

Thank God my mommy is coming on Friday morning. I don't know what I would do if she wasn't coming. Anyway I just thought I'd share. Hope to see you all this Saturday!

Hello My Lovelies,

I know I have not been on here as much as I should be so please forgive me in advance! I have wonderful news to share with you. As many of you know I started P.S. You're Lovely back in April of 2011 and its been an amazing year so far. I have met some amazing women that have lifted and supported me continously through all my thoughts, ideas, fails, and triumphs and now this! The AMAZINGLY Lovely ladies at Heights Beatniks have not only decided to carry my line but are allowing me to host my FIRST Trunk Show in their store! I can't tell you how excited and blessed I am!

So here's the deets! P.S. You're Lovely Presents "Flaws & All" 2012 Trunk Show on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at Heights Beatniks in Houston, TX!

I chose the name Flaws & All because that's what P.S. You're Lovely is all about! I only use freshwater pearls in my designs because they are not perfectly round. Their flaws are what make them unique and beautiful. Women are just like freshwater pearls: we are all flawed in one way or another but that is what makes each of us unique. The jewelry I design and create for P.S. You’re Lovely is a reminder that you are lovely, flaws and all, and there will never be another woman like you.

I hope you can all come and see what I have been working on. Guys, I would suggest you come too because P.S. You're Handsome will be unveiled and you WANT to see this. Trust me!

Megan's Latest Update: The Pain

Another short post. Just wanted to give ya'll the latest link to check in on Megan. Feel free to send her your love and support. She'd really like that.

I don’t think words could do justice to the amount of pain that I’m in right now. And regular pain killers wont do anything to take it away because it’s not joint or nerve or muscle pain. It’s brain tumor pain. A whole ‘nother beast. My whole right side is engulfed in pain. I would get all verbose on ya’ll and use a different word besides pain but I need to emphasize the extent of the pain that I’m feeling. My chest hurts. It hurts when breathe. Lol, but don’t laugh. There is pain when I walk. And I live in a tri-level townhome. I’m the one who cleans and cooks. The house is untidy and we’ve been crock-pot cooking around this mug. Read More

Sharing is Educating

When they share their experiences we all learn a little more. This comic is just one person's story and its so different from Megan's but it allows you to see that the causes of Epilepsy are wide spread.

Conquering Fear

Hello Lovelies,

Thank you so much for being so supportive this month. "Megan's Necklace" was created specially for Epilepsy Awareness Month and $5 of each purchase will going to Epilepsy Research. The biggest issue when it comes to Epilepsy is the fear of not knowing what to do if someone with Epilepsy should have a seizure.

Here's a little list of DO's and DON'Ts from the Mayo Clinic that I think will be very helpful. Knowledge is the first step to conquering that fear.

Gently roll the person onto one side.
Put something soft under his or her head.
Loosen tight neckwear.
Don't try to put your fingers or anything else in the person's mouth. No one has ever "swallowed" his or her tongue during a seizure — it's physically impossible.
Don't try to restrain someone having a seizure.
Don't attempt to rouse the person by shouting at or shaking him or her.
If the person is moving, clear away dangerous objects.
Stay with the person until medical personnel arrive.
Observe the person closely so that you can provide details on what happened.
Time the seizures with your watch.
Keep calm and reassure others nearby.

I want you to really pay attention to #4...for some reason people always say that you are supposed to put a spoon in the person's mouth while they are having a seizure so they don't swallow their tongue and it's WRONG! It is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to swallow your tongue so please NEVER put anything in the person's mouth.

Most importantly just stay calm. You are more help when you are calm.

What Causes Epilepsy?

Hey Lovelies,

It has been a very interesting day... Megan received some news today and I think we are all unsure about how we feel about it. Are we happy to have an answer? Are we ok with the answer we got? Are we scared of what happens next?

Epilepsy can be caused by many different factors and that's part of what makes it so hard to understand. I found an article from the Epilepsy Therapy Project that I wanted to share with you and then I'll fill you in on Megan.

Many famous people in history had or may have had epilepsy, including world leaders like Julius Caesar, writers like Lewis Carroll who wrote Alice in Wonderland, artists like Vincent van Gogh, and athletes like Chanda Gunn, goaltender for the US Olympic hockey team.

The causes of epilepsy can be divided into two groups: brain injuries and chemical imbalances in the brain. Anything that injures the brain can lead to seizures. But in over half the cases no cause can be identified.

The type of injury that can lead to a seizure is age‐dependent. Seizures in children often are caused by birth traumas, infections, such as meningitis, congenital abnormalities or high fevers. Seizures in the middle years commonly are caused by head injuries, infections, alcohol, stimulant drugs or medication side effects. In the elderly, brain tumors and strokes cause a higher proportion of seizures.

So now back to Megan. She called me this morning and told me she just received a call from Mayo Clinic with news of their findings. The findings were...she has a brain tumor. Yep, a brain tumor and it could possible be the cause of her epilepsy and her mystery illness that has consumed the past 6 years of her life. What is Epilepsy?

Hello Lovelies,

What is Epilepsy? Many think they know but many are very wrong. My goal this month is to help educate you as best I can about Epilepsy and to help fund research.

The Epilepsy Foundation explains Epilepsy as follows:
Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions. It’s also called a seizure disorder. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy.

A seizure happens when a brief, strong surge of electrical activity affects part or all of the brain. One in 10 adults will have a seizure sometime during their life.

Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. They can have many symptoms, from convulsions and loss of consciousness to some that are not always recognized as seizures by the person experiencing them or by health care professionals: blank staring, lip smacking, or jerking movements of arms and legs.

For everyone the experience is different. Some people have one symptom and others can have multiple combinations but the point I'm trying to get across is that Epilepsy DOES NOT EQUAL convulsions in every person with this condition. For Megan, the symptoms never told her Epilepsy and when she finally did have a Grand Mal Seizure (convulsions) that's when she found out that what she couldn't explain had a name.

We, as a public, as uneducated about something that affects so many people. Get Seizure Smart.

Epilepsy Awareness Month and What It Means to Me

Hello Lovelies,

November is a very special month and I hope you will support this cause that means so much to me. My best friend, Megan Ford, was diagnosed with Epilepsy this past summer and it has completely changed her life at the age of 25. Through her struggles I have learned there is not much education out there about Epilepsy and many misconceptions about how it affects the every day lives of many people.

November is Epilepsy Awareness month so I want to do my part to help education the masses and donate to the research. The color for Epilepsy Awareness month is Purple so for the month of November P.S. You’re Lovely will have some special pieces and $5 for each purchase will go to Epilepsy Research in honor of Megan Ford.

Epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide or approximately 1 in 100 people. That's more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson's disease combined.

Throughout the month I will post information about Epilepsy, Megan’s personal story, and different pieces that you can purchase to support the cause. An "Epilepsy Awareness Month" page has been added to the blog where the pieces will be showcased.

Craft Night: Chain Maille

Hey Lovelies,

So tonight I decided I was going to have a personal Craft Night. I wanted to learn something I didn't know how to do so I decided how to teach myself how to do Chain Maille.

What is Chain Maille?
Chainmaille (also known as chainmail, or simply maille) is typically armor or jewelry made by connecting metal rings to one another. The word maille derives from the French word maille (mesh), which comes from Latin macula (mesh of a net). Creating something out of maille involves a few steps:

Wrap metal wire around a rod to make a coil.
Cut the coil, creating individual "jump rings."
Using pliers, link the rings—one at a time—into a pattern.

Long Time

Hello My Lovelies,

I hope you all have had a wonderful week. I'm on cloud nine as I finish packing for my FIRST cruise tomorrow. I wanted to share a little bit about myself with all of you so here we go. I consider myself a vintage girl with a love of the Hollywood stars of the 1920s-1960s-ish. I pull my inspiration for style, class, and life from so many wonderful people and things of these times.

Today's Vintage-spiration comes from my absolute favorite actress, style icon, and all around amazing person, Miss Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. As I'm packing I'm watching Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire and I just wanted to share some of my fav pics from the movie. Enjoy.

After I read this I realized something else. It's not just about HOW you want to be remembered but its also about WHO you remember as you make your way to the top. The people who really want to see you succeed in whatever you do in life will be there no matter what. Take faith and pride on your way to the top but just don't forget about the people who carried you when you were weak.

Baby Girls Grow Up So Fast

I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July and enjoy all the pleasures of summer fun and foods. I had an amazing weekend but its back to work now. I wanted to share a special order with you today.

I just finished a Baby Girl's First Pearls for an order child. I simply increased in length of the necklace but kept the same pearl size so it doesn't become an overwhelming necklace for a young girl.

14" 4mm necklace with Swarovski Crystals

This necklace is 14" instead of the traditional 12" that you see for the baby's necklace.

Introducing The Perfect Pair Collection

Almost a month ago I posted some earring styles I was playing with. I haven't gotten to the point of comments following in on my blog yet but through facebook and friends they encouraged me to put them out there. I posted on my Facebook Fanpage The Perfect Pair Collection was now for sale late this past Wednesday night. I was totally putting it out there on faith.

I woke up Thursday morning to a very surprising Facebook message from Ellie, the best friend of one of my past brides, she was interested in purchasing TWO pair of my earrings. It might sound so small but it truly made my day. She was planning on giving them to a friend as a birthday present during their cruise to Cancun and needed them quickly since she was leaving Tuesday. I was able to finish the order and delivery it personally so I could guarantee it would make it to her on time. She loved them and to be there to see her first impression touched my heart. I can''t wait to hear what the birthday girl thinks about them!

If you're on my newsletter mailing list you can expect an email introducing the collection officially and they'll be posted to their own special page on the blog soon enough. Lovely Lessons: Do Something Scary

Hello My Lovelies,

I'm back from camping and I just want to say I had an AMAZING time! But we'll come back to that in just a minute. I was visiting one of my new fav blogs, Blackburg Belle, and April had a very touching Vlog where she encouraged each one of us to take a moment to step outside our comfort zone and "Do One Thing That Scares You." So today I'm challenging you to do just that... here's my story.

Today's Lovely Lesson: Do Something Scary

This past weekend was one for the books. As many of you know I went camping and I was beyond excited, what you might not know is that my friend had to back out last minute. I love to have fun but normally my best friend is right there with me or I'm with a group of friends. Having someone I know around me has always been a crutch and although I make new friends easily, breaking the ice has never been one of my fav things to do. In December my best friend moved to STL (an extreme after living no more than 10mins from each other our entire friendship) and I had to make the decision to step outside of my comfort zone and learn how to enjoy doing things on my own or without knowing anyone. Bestie, you know how hard this is for me.

When my friend had to back out, my first mind was to cancel the trip all together but then I realized I was canceling something I really wanted to do just because I had to do it alone. There was a meet up for all the campers, new and old, so I told myself that I would attend and how I felt would determine if I went or not. People let me tell you... I HAD A BLAST! I quickly met the organizers of the whole trip and told them that not only was this my first time but that I was also coming alone and they quickly put my mind at ease, introduced me to everyone and convinced me to join the early crew that was headed out on Thursday. That evening I went home and packed up all my stuff and arrived at camp Thursday for a weekend that I will always remember.

I see that this post is already getting lengthy but the point is that you never know where your next adventure, moment, memory, smile lies so do something scary and live it up. Step outside of you comfort zone and see what's waiting out there for you. If I had stayed home this weekend I would have never known how much I love camping, missed a chance to go tubing on the river, and never met 20 something new friends.

I extended this challenge to each of you! Do something scary and tell us all about it. Make sure you take a moment to listen to April's Vlog and I promised you'll be moved today.

Lovely Lessons: Birthstones vs. Zodiac

Hello My Lovelies,

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Weekend and spent plenty of time with family and friends! I'm currently trying not to get sick so I can be ready for my CAMPING TRIP this weekend with my dear friend and about 80 new friends.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. It came to my attention that some people are unaware of what their birthstone is and that your birthstone corresponds with the month of your birth and not your zodiac sign so I'm here to help.

Today's Lovely Lesson is Birthstones vs. Zodiac

I am a very proud April baby. Since my birthday is on April 12th I fall under the zodiac sign of Aries. Aries start the cycle of the zodiac and are born between March 21st and April 19th. There are a total of 12 zodiac signs just like the calendar but these follow the path of the sun in 30 degree blocks. I don't want to get too deep into it but the point is there is a difference between the two.

Although two months share the same zodiac each month has its own Birthstone. April's birthstone is the Diamond while March's birthstone is Aquamarine or Bloodstone.

Below are two birthstone charts. You'll notice that some months have multiple stones. In my designs I pick the stone that goes best with the combination for each necklace.

I hope these charts educated you and also helped you envision what your Family Tree necklace or Baby Girl's First Pearls will look like.

Lovely Lessons: Shipping and Handling

Along my journey I will share the "Lovely Lessons" that I've learned and my hope is that my fellow crafters, jewelry makers, and Etsy community will share their stories so that I may learn from them as well.

Today's Lovely Lesson: Understanding Shipping and Handling Takes Time.

When I first decided that I wanted to start P.S. You're Lovely I thought that it would be as easy as making a wonderful necklace, someone will love it and buy it, and I'll drop it in the mail. PERFECT. I didn't even think about how I was going to package it, what that would cost, printing cost, shipping packaging, will I offer insurance, and the actual shipping. My head started spinning and I tried my best to figure it out on my own. I did ok but I quickly realized that I was not covering my cost and if I kept it up that I would soon end up eating my actual profits.

To start, you need to know how much your method of packaging cost.
I know I need the box to put the necklace in, the business cards I put inside to pass along to friends, and the bubble envelop to ship the box.

Second, you need to understand your shipping options.

Will you shipping First Class or Priority? Can you even ship First Class? I was trying to figure out how to handle my shipping and handling for multiple items and if it made more sense to package everything as one package and send them off individually. You can only ship First Class it what you're mailing is 13oz or less and once you go over 13oz your next option becomes Priority. If I have to mail off any combination of 2 necklaces that are multiple strands it automatically sends me to Priority based on the weight.

For my current order of 3 necklaces the weight is 22oz.
If I mail it Priority but I use my own packaging (bubble envelop, box, etc.), my price will be $7.90.
If I try to use a Flat Rate box ("If it fits, it ships"), then my price is $10.95
If I mail each necklace First Class separately, my price totals only $7.68

First Class is clearly the best option for me and I now see why so many in the Etsy community use this option. Any other option would mean I would have to charge more for shipping and handling and at the end of the day every cent matters.

Needless to say, because of this Lovely Lesson, I quickly corrected my Shipping and Handling to protect everyone's pockets and ensure that each product from P.S. You're Lovely arrives safely to your hands. I put a lot of care into each piece I make and always want to ensure the presentation and quality of each piece make you want to come back soon.

Oh yeah, for those of you that I know personally and its easier for me to hand delivery it to you, I still have to cover the packaging that you receive so please be understanding that a fee will still apply.

I'm sure you've noticed how amazingly beautiful my lovely models look in everything you've seen from P.S. You're Lovely... Well, behind every shoot is the where the real magic begins. I would like to introduce you to Lisa Capchino of Capuchino Beauty, the amazing makeup artist behind the PSYL shoot.

Lisa has always loved the idea of creating through makeup and in 2003 she took that leap of faith and Capuchino Makeup was born. With Capunchinno Makeup she supplied makeup artist and hairstyles to any job they could "get a brush on." They were able to conquer making their clients look good but now they wanted to make them feel good. Fast Forward to 2006 and the total concept of Capuchino Beauty came to life with a company that still offers the services they were known for but with some wonderful additions like makeup lessons and Beauty Parties for you and your girls. Through her blog, CBeauty 411, she offer tips for beauty, everyday life and giving back to the community.

It was such a blessing to have her on the shoot and her work is amazing. She heard my vision for the girls and delivered beyond my expectations. She allowed that natural beauty to shine through and didn't cover them in layers of makeup. I was able to wear my makeup all day long and never felt like I just HAD to get it off.

Necklaces for Lady Luxe: Mother's Day Comes Early

If you saw the sneak peek I put on Facebook last week for Lady Luxe I'm sure you've been waiting for the full picture. Erika, Lady Luxe herself, is the owner of a event resource studio in Houston called Event Luxe & Co. and she requested a Mother's Day gift for her mother and a special necklace for herself.

The necklace above was for her mother and has the birthstones of Erika, her husband, and their 3 children. From Left to Right: Erika: Crystal (April), Royal: Blue Zircon (December), Zion: Peridot (August), Destiny: Alexandrite (June), Cecil: Turquoise (December)

NOTE: December has a couple of different birthstones

This special Mini Audrey was transformed by making the center stone of each strand the birthstone of her 3 children.

I think it looks pretty good if I do say so myself.

A Gift for a "Little Legacy"

This little beauty was dropped in the mail this weekend to one of my lovely sorority sisters that will be giving birth to a baby girl this summer. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's colors are pink and green so I used Rosaline for the pink, Crystal, and Peridot for the Green.

A Necklace for Emani

Hello Lovelies,

This post didn't post on Friday like it was supposed to but i still wanted to share with ya'll! Enjoy!

I hope you're having a wonderful Friday. The skys in Houston today are perfect and there is a nice breeze. I just got back home from a planning lunch at Yard House in City Centre and all I can say is... yummy! The food is amazing! Oh...what was I planning? A camping trip! I'm so excited and I can't wait til you see the shirts were gonna make!

Anyway...back to the good stuff. I just finished Baby Girl's First Pearls for little Emani and they came out so cute! Emani is my Soror, Richandra's, daughter and it was my pleasure to be able to give her a very special pair of pearls.

Here's the family combo. Richandra's birthstone for January is Garnet (Deep Red), Emani's birthstone for July is Peridot (Pale Green), and Oto's birthstone for December is Blue Zircon (Blue)

It All Started With Her

Hello My Lovelies,

So in this blog you'll get to know a little about P.S. You're Lovely, a little about me, and hopefully you'll allow me to learn from you as well by leaving comments!

It all started with her...my mommy! My mom has been into art and crafts long before I was even a twinkle in her eyes. She always made sure that my sister and I had an appreciation for art. We didn't have to understand or even like it but we had to APPRECIATE and ACCEPT that it was art.

I moved to Houston for college back in 2004 and I've always been a little crafty but never enough to want to keep the project up. I've learned how to scrapbook, do altered books (super cool but they take more time than a scrapbook if your mind loves everything like me), paint (a little), use fabric as wallpaper (you should see my bedroom), and finally one visit she taught me about JEWELRY!

I have to admit I have always given my mom a hard time about ALL the crafts that take over her home but I can't thank her enough for all she's taught me.

Ok so back to the story. One visit she was on a jewelry kick and I was totally into it since I'm such a girlie girl. We strung a couple of necklaces and played around with the different techniques. All I have to say is when we decide to learn how to knot pearls at 12am it was not our smartest idea and I'm still not the largest fan but I have an APPRECIATION for those that can do it.

By the time I headed back to Houston I had finished a knotted 3 strand pearl necklace that I was so proud of. My mom starting supplying me with the tools for my new craft like she always had but it was about 2 years before I visited it again. I thought I had found a nice little hobby but before I knew it I had people asking me when I was going to make them one or do something more with it.

Long story short...P.S. You're Lovely was my final destination and I can't say thank you enough to my wonderful mommy for being a Jack of all trades.
